How Meals Work in France
Lunch12:00–14:00 is sacred. Restaurants close kitchens by 14:00 sharp. Many close entirely between 14:30–19:00.
DinnerStarts 19:30–20:30. Earlier than 19:30 you'll sit in an empty room. Don't arrive after 21:00 — kitchens close 21:30–22:00.
WaterAsk for "une carafe d'eau" (tap water) — it's free. Bottled water (plate = still, gazeuse = sparkling) costs €3–5.
BreadAlways served free with meals. Placed directly on the table (not on your plate). It's for mopping up sauce — not an appetizer.
TippingService is included (service compris). Leave €1–2 for good service if you want, but never expected. No percentage calculation.
BillYou must ask for it: "L'addition, s'il vous plaît." They will never bring it unsolicited — hovering is rude.
SplittingSplitting bills is unusual. One person pays, or ask for separate checks ("comptes séparés") at the start — awkward midway.

Social Norms & Greetings
BonjourSay "Bonjour" when entering any shop, café, or restaurant. Not saying it is genuinely rude. Say "Au revoir" when leaving.
BiseThe cheek-kiss greeting (la bise) — in Nantes it's 2 kisses, starting right cheek. For first meetings, a handshake is fine.
VolumeFrench people speak quietly in public. American-volume conversation in a restaurant is very noticeable. Dial it down.
Please"S'il vous plaît" (formal) after any request. "Merci" for thank you. "Pardon" if you bump into someone or need to pass.
QueuesThe French queue, but it can be invisible. If unsure, ask "C'est vous le dernier?" (Are you last in line?).
SundaysMost shops are closed. Boulangeries (bakeries) are open mornings. Markets sometimes. Plan accordingly — Sunday 17 May.

What to Eat & Drink in Nantes
MuscadetThe local white wine — dry, mineral, perfect with seafood. Look for "Muscadet Sèvre et Maine sur Lie" on menus.
GalettesBuckwheat crêpes (savoury) — the local specialty. Complète = ham, cheese, egg. Pair with cidre (cider) in a bolée cup.
CrêpesSweet crêpes are wheat flour. Beurre-sucre (butter-sugar) is the classic. Salted caramel (caramel beurre salé) is the Breton signature.
Fruits de merSeafood platters (oysters, langoustines, whelks, crab) are spectacular in this region. Nantes is a major seafood hub.
LU BiscuitsNantes is the birthplace of Petit-Beurre and BN biscuits. The old LU factory is now Le Lieu Unique arts centre.
CheeseCuré Nantais is the local washed-rind cheese — strong, creamy. A cheese plate for dessert is standard (before or instead of sweet).
ApéroPre-dinner drinks with snacks. Order a Kir (white wine + cassis) or a pression (draft beer). Usually 18:30–19:30.
